Tom Smith

Tom Smith, age 85 of Rockwall, TX, passed away July 25, 2022. He was born October 5, 1936, in Wichita, KS, to Charles Merle Smith and Helen Margaret (Thomas) Smith. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Japan. Tom was on Admiral’s staff and played fastpitch softball for the fleet team. He began his career with Dillon’s grocery and rose through the ranks to become President of the Calhoun’s Department store chain while living in Hutchinson, KS. In 1985, Tom established Smith Gas Liquids Company in Holland, MI, which is in its 37th year of operation. After selling the company, he and his wife of 60 years, Genny, moved to Rockwall to be near their family. Away from work, Tom was an avid duck hunter and fisherman, achieved his pilot license, enjoyed boating on Lake Michigan, played tennis and golf and was a spin instructor at the Rockwall YMCA.

Tom is survived by his daughter: Laurie Lagerberg and husband Jeff; son: Richard Smith and wife Leah; grandsons: Adam Lagerberg, and Brett Lagerberg and wife Lauren; granddaughters: Rachel Smith and Lauren Smith; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Genny Smith, his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Private services will be held Saturday, July 30, 2022.
